Balvenie Peat Week Aged 14 Year Old – 2003 Vintage Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar 12 December 2018
Balvenie is located in Dufftown.
In early 1892 work began to convert an 18th-century mansion (Balvenie New House) into a distillery. The building took fifteen months to complete, and on 1 May 1893, the first distillation took place at the Balvenie Distillery. Since being first built, Balvenie has been continually under the ownership of William Grant & Sons, proprietors also of the two neighboring Speyside distilleries Glenfiddich and Kininvie.
David Stewart MBE, Balvenie’s Master Distiller, was key in the evolution of Wood Finishing, a process whereby whiskies are “flipped” from an ex-Bourbon barrel, for example, into a cask that has been used for maturing Sherry, resulting in a dramatic shift in the final flavor of the whisky.
It is one of the few Scotch distilleries to boast in-house floor maltings, using locally hand-cut peat. The floor maltings at Balvenie also supply neighboring Glenfiddich.
Over the last few years, Balvenie has become the ninth bestselling single malt. An award-winning distillery, in the past 10 years it has received over 10 awards for its various whiskies.
Balvenie has a large range of whiskies from the core range to the triple cask range, limited editions and vintage casks.
Balvenie Peat Week Aged 14 Year Old – 2003 Vintage (48.3%)
Since 2002, the Balvenie distillers have dedicated one week a year to distilling whisky with 100% peated barley, resulting in the Peat Week bottlings! This is the second release in the series; a 14 year old single malt distilled in 2003.
